WE STILL TOLERATE FAR TOO MUCH

"My son was dead. My day began with fear, it ended with fear. I sensed exactly when someone just thought: It's her own fault or said cynically: Well, you knew that beforehand, if you hadn't applied to leave the country ..."

The year 1983 is the high point of resistance in Jena. More and more people apply to leave the country and pay a high price for it, including Monika Lembke. Her son is bullied at school, receives a PM 12 at the age of 16 and finally takes his own life in March of that year! The author was stigmatized, followed by endless interrogations by the State Security, and her applications to leave the country were repeatedly rejected. She knows this must finally come to an end!

"I had an idea: we'll stand in a square, we'll attract attention ..."

The book is an extraordinary contemporary document in which the author describes the mechanisms of maintaining power and the images of the enemy in the GDR dictatorship. She describes the significance of the White Circle as a new form of resistance and analyzes how the emigration movement developed into a political explosive for the SED regime.
